Community Sampler Week 3

I find myself looking forward to Wednesday afternoons when each new Community Sampler block is posted by Sharon Holland and Maureen Cracknell.

This week's block is called Dovecote and is another fun block.  After several days working with the tiny pieces that made up my eight Hazel Hedgehog blocks (for my Fancy Forest quilt), it was nice to be working with larger pieces of fabric.

As I mentioned in a previous post, I have chosen to make my entire quilt from a mixture of Charleston  and Les Petits fabrics, both designed by Amy Sinibaldi for Art Gallery Fabrics.  If you follow me on Instagram, you will know that I am a big fan of all Amy's fabrics (I have made a half square triangle quilt in Paperie and my Sewcial Bee Sampler quilt in the Playground line).

These are the fabrics I chose to use for this week's block.  No directional prints this week, so I didn't have to worry about cutting any of my pieces in a particular way so that the block would look 'right' when set on-point.

This year, I think Sharon has decided to give instructions for making slightly larger pieced units that can be trimmed to size.  Although I don't usually trim as I go, I think this method will work well for me - I rarely seem to get my 1/4" seam perfect (although as long as I'm consistently imperfect I seem to get along ok!).

I am a big fan of the HST blocloc ruler; it really is a game changer for HST trimming.  I searched for ages for them in the UK with little success until Olive and Flo Handcraft  started stocking them.

I haven't invested in a Flying Geese blocloc ruler yet (I don't really make flying geese enough to justify it yet), so I just used my usual 6 1/2" ruler and made sure that I allowed a 1/4" above the point to make sure I don't lose it after block assembly.

After all that trimming, the block comes together so easily, with nice sharp points.

I love the nine patch in the middle too, I just might have to make a whole quilt of them ...  possibly in all the blues from each of Amy's ranges.  A project for another day though, there are only so many WIPs I can have on the go at once!

If you would like to join in with this sew along, make sure you pop to Sharon and Maureen's blogs for so much inspiration plus check out the #communitysampler hashtag on Instagram.
